Julia Ruhs will no longer host the “Klar” program for NDR (North German Broadcasting), a decision announced by the broadcaster. She will, however, continue to present episodes produced by Bayerischer Rundfunk (BR). The shift follows reports in the German media alleging a campaign by NDR employees targeting Ruhs, reportedly due to perceptions of her as a “conservative journalist.
The situation is escalating into a political matter, with significant commentary emerging from within Germany’s political landscape. Carsten Linnemann, General Secretary of the Christian Democratic Union (CDU), voiced his concern on the television station “Welt”. He characterized the episode as a “new low point for the culture of debate” in Germany.
Linnemann expressed what he described as a growing sentiment among citizens who feel increasingly restricted in their ability to express opinions freely, fearing subsequent labeling. He criticized the decision to effectively exclude a journalist from NDR based on perceived ideological leanings. “This is a low point and consequences must follow” he stated.
Highlighting the diversity of viewpoints within Germany’s political spectrum, Linnemann emphasized the importance of a broad range of perspectives. He argued that labeling dissenting opinions as “right-wing” hinders healthy debate and undermines the mandate of public broadcasting. He reiterated the core functions of Germany’s public broadcasters – culture, education and information – stressing the necessity of diverse voices within that framework.
Linnemann is advocating for financial adjustments to the publicly funded broadcasters as a consequence. He suggested freezing broadcasting fees at their current level to create pressure for reform and a streamlining of institutional structures.
He also commended Schleswig-Holstein’s Minister President and fellow CDU member, Daniel Günther, for publicly engaging with the controversy, noting the importance of diverse viewpoints, encompassing both progressive and conservative perspectives. “The situation with Ms. Ruhs is deeply concerning and I welcome the debate and Mr. Günther’s response – a display of character demonstrating that such actions cannot continue”.
