The decision by North German Broadcasting (NDR) to cease collaboration with journalist Julia Ruhs has drawn criticism, with veteran late-night show host Harald Schmidt drawing parallels to recent developments in the United States. Schmidt, in comments to the “Tagesspiegel”, noted the irony of scrutinizing the cancellation of the “Jimmy Kimmel Live” show – which faced controversy after addressing alleged political exploitation of the death of a right-wing influencer – while simultaneously addressing a similar situation unfolding within Germany’s public broadcasting system. He suggested the NDR’s internal issues were being addressed by its own editorial staff.
Julia Ruhs previously hosted several episodes of the program “Klar” a format produced by NDR and Bavarian Broadcasting (BR) that explores socially contentious topics. The program’s inaugural episode, focusing on migration, garnered significant attention, particularly due to its discussion of violence related to immigration.
NDR now states that Ruhs will not be utilized as a moderator for the program moving forward. However, the Baden-Württemberg native, who is also the author of “Left-Green Opinion Power – The Division of Our Country” remains part of the moderation team for episodes produced by BR. Both broadcasting stations confirmed this arrangement in a joint statement released this week.
