Oktoberfest 190: Munich Celebrates!

Munich’s annual Oktoberfest celebration commenced Saturday midday with the traditional ceremonial tapping of the first beer barrel. Lord Mayor Dieter Reiter, performing the symbolic act for the tenth time, required two strikes to unlock the keg, as per established custom. Following the tapping, he declared the customary phrase, “O’zapft is! Auf eine friedliche Wiesn!” – signifying the festival’s official start and wishing for a peaceful celebration.

Bavarian State Premier Markus Söder was presented with the first mug of beer, adhering to long-standing tradition. Addressing the attendees, Söder acknowledged the current challenging global climate and expressed hope that the Oktoberfest would provide a temporary respite from pressing issues, allowing for a period of joyful festivities.

The world’s largest folk festival, lasting 16 days from September 20th to October 5th, anticipates welcoming approximately six million visitors from around the globe.
