Germany Faces “Hybrid Threat” Says Minister

Germany’s Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt has characterized the current threat landscape within the country as “abstract yet significant” adding that in specific instances, the danger is also tangible. The statement came during a parliamentary debate concerning his ministry’s budget within the Bundestag on Thursday.

Dobrindt highlighted recent incidents, referencing drone overflights of critical infrastructure in Denmark overnight. He asserted that Germany is facing a hybrid threat involving acts of sabotage and espionage, prompting a corresponding build-up of defensive capabilities.

“A Zeitenwende-a fundamental shift in policy-does not solely represent an expansion of military defense” the Minister explained. “It also entails strengthening internal security.

Acknowledging a developing dynamic, Dobrindt announced an escalation of investment in counter-drone technology. “We are engaged in an arms race between drone threats and drone defense and we will invest more heavily in this competition” he stated. He further indicated planned revisions to the Air Security Act and the allocation of resources based on a three-pronged approach: detection, deterrence and interception.
