Bavarian Digital Minister Fabian Mehring (Free Voters) has voiced support for an alliance with the FDP at the federal level. Speaking to the “Augsburger Allgemeine”, he stated that Bavaria’s second-strongest political force could leverage its influence in the state to help the FDP build its presence in the remainder of the republic.
The minister compared the concept of a liberal-conservative alliance to the model used by the CDU and CSU. According to Mehring, a “Union of Freedom” established through united forces would easily clear the five-percent threshold, thus adding two more centrist forces to the Bundestag. He added that this collaboration would finally make bourgeois majorities possible, working alongside the Union.
Mehring noted that the proposal has met with some enthusiasm among members of the Free Voters, stating, “Whenever I have discussed this idea, there has been a great deal of openness and agreement.”
