German Employers Push to End Pflegegrad 1

Concerns are mounting over the financial sustainability of Germany’s care insurance system, prompting discussions about potential reforms. Steffen Kampeter, Managing Director of the Confederation of German Employer Associations (BDA), has voiced support for the government’s consideration of adjustments to the current system, specifically regarding Pflegegrad 1 (care level 1).

Speaking to the “Rheinische Post” Kampeter emphasized the looming threat of escalating contributions to the care insurance system without necessary reforms. He welcomed the initiative by Federal Minister of Health Nina Warken to initiate this debate, characterizing it as demonstrating courage and a sense of responsibility.

Kampeter argued that the care insurance should prioritize individuals facing significant care needs they cannot manage independently. He suggested that Pflegegrad 1 should not be excluded from discussions on reform, advocating for a reassessment of its inclusion within the system.

Furthermore, Kampeter stressed the importance of strengthening the responsibility of insured individuals through targeted incentives promoting preventative measures and private provision. He believes this approach is crucial to achieve a balanced and sustainable reform of the care insurance system.
