Borussia Mönchengladbach has announced the departure of its Sporting Director, Roland Virkus, following a mutual agreement. The Bundesliga club confirmed the decision on Tuesday, citing a desire to restructure the club’s sporting direction.
Virkus, who stepped down at his own request, released a statement emphasizing his commitment to the club’s well-being. “I have always said that the club is above everything and that is why I have made this decision” he stated.
The departure follows a recent change in management, with coach Gerardo Seoane previously relieved of his duties two matchdays ago. Club president Rainer Bonhof expressed understanding and appreciation for Virkus’s decision, acknowledging the difficulty of the move. “We are in agreement within the club’s leadership that we want to set up the sporting area differently for the future. This step was certainly not easy for Roland, as he lives and breathes Borussia and took on the position of Sporting Director in a very difficult situation in February 2022. We thank him for his commitment as Managing Director. He has worked for our club in various positions for more than 30 years and will always remain a Borusse.
Virkus’s career with Borussia Mönchengladbach began in 1990 as a youth coach, progressing through various roles including head of the U15, U17 and U19 teams. He assumed responsibility for the club’s youth academy in 2004, where he, along with then-youth director Max Eberl, oversaw the development of the program at the newly constructed BORUSSIA-PARK. Virkus ascended to the position of Head of Youth Development in 2008, a role he held until his appointment as Sporting Director in 2022.
