Expect Clear Warnings

Following recent airspace violations involving NATO member states attributed to Russia, German Vice Chancellor Lars Klingbeil has urged the transatlantic alliance to deliver clear and unambiguous messages to Moscow. In an interview with the Tagesspiegel, Klingbeil emphasized the seriousness of the situation, stating he is “taking very seriously what is currently happening”. He called for frank discussions within NATO bodies and publicly directed towards Russia, highlighting what he perceives as provocative actions by President Putin, probing the boundaries of acceptable behavior.

Klingbeil cautioned against dismissing the airspace incursions lightly, stressing the need to demonstrate a recognition of past miscalculations and a reassessment of security perceptions. He underscored the importance of establishing a firm stance towards Russia, signaling clear limitations and boundaries. He noted the significance of a clear commitment from U.S. President Donald Trump regarding the security of Europe and the strength of NATO.

The Finance Minister also defended the substantial increase in German defense spending. Klingbeil explained that the investment is a consequence of a period of complacency lasting two decades and a subsequent failure to adequately respond to Russia’s annexation of Crimea in 2014. He acknowledged the need to rapidly address those shortcomings.

Chancellor Olaf Scholz has already taken considerable steps in this direction, Klingbeil noted and the current government has laid the necessary foundations, including constitutional amendments. Klingbeil affirmed his commitment to being accountable to voters and ensuring the security of the nation.

Reflecting on past approaches, Klingbeil stated, “We were too naive in our dealings with Putin”. He emphasized that repeating that error is unacceptable, arguing that Putin primarily understands the language of strength. This conviction has driven the significant investment in security and defense, alongside efforts to strengthen Germany’s armed forces.
