Peak Reductions Expected in 2027-2028

Lufthansa Group is embarking on a significant restructuring program involving the reduction of approximately 4,000 administrative positions by 2030. The planned personnel cuts, primarily impacting operations within Germany, are part of a broader transformation strategy aimed at integrating the group’s premium airlines more closely.

According to Lufthansa’s Chief Human Resources Officer, Michael Niggemann, the precise locations and timelines for the job cuts remain to be determined. He emphasized that the process will not involve a blanket reduction across all departments, dismissing the idea of a widespread, uniform staff reduction.

Niggemann indicated that the peak period for workforce reduction is anticipated to occur in 2027 and 2028. The timing of specific measures will be contingent on the progress of various ongoing projects, particularly within the company’s complex IT infrastructure. He noted that engagement with employee representatives has already begun in some areas, while others require additional time to assess and plan effectively. The restructuring is described as a direct consequence of the group’s ongoing transformation efforts.
