Greens Urge German Action

Following a declaration from Hamas, the radical Islamist organization, regarding the potential release of Israeli hostages and discussions surrounding the peace plan proposed by former U.S. President Donald Trump, Franziska Brantner, the Green Party leader, has urged German Chancellor Friedrich Merz (CDU) to proactively engage in efforts to foster peace in the region.

Brantner, in statements to the Funke-Mediengruppe newspapers, emphasized that while caution remains essential, Hamas’s shift in position represents a necessary and significant initial step towards a peaceful resolution. She further stipulated that this development should be followed by Hamas’s unconditional surrender and complete disarmament.

The Green Party leader also stressed that the Israeli government subsequently holds a responsibility to uphold its commitments, including the withdrawal from the Gaza Strip. Brantner reiterated the continued importance of the two-state solution as a cornerstone for the security of both Israelis and Palestinians and for achieving a lasting peace. She called for a departure from what she characterized as Chancellor Merz’s previous policy of inaction in addressing the conflict.
