Germany’s SPD Opposes Expanding Military’s Drone Defense Role

The debate surrounding drone defense strategies has intensified in Germany, with the Social Democratic Party (SPD) voicing concerns over proposals to involve the armed forces in domestic drone countermeasures. While acknowledging the importance of the discussion, the SPD has expressed reservations regarding plans championed by Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt (CSU).

Falko Droßmann, the SPD’s parliamentary group spokesperson for defense policy, stated in an interview with “Der Spiegel” that assigning drone defense responsibilities to the military within Germany would be unsustainable. He emphasized that German soldiers already face significant provocations from Russia on a daily basis – on land, at sea, in the air and in cyberspace – and diverting resources to also fulfill the responsibilities of the police domestically would be impractical.

Droßmann suggested that Interior Minister Dobrindt should prioritize the existing capabilities of the Federal Police to address drone-related security concerns, rather than broadening the military’s role. The dialogue surrounding the escalating challenge of drone usage is expected to continue as authorities grapple with potential solutions.
