Caritas Urges Focus on Social Inclusion, Not Cityscape Aesthetics

The recent discourse surrounding urban landscapes, spearheaded by CDU leader Friedrich Merz, has drawn sharp criticism from Eva Maria Welskop-Deffaa, president of the German Caritasverband. Welskop-Deffaa, herself a member of the CDU, argues that the prevailing focus on “urban aesthetics” obscures a crucial element often overlooked: the social fabric of communities.

In an interview with “Stern”, Welskop-Deffaa asserted that Caritas views these spaces not merely as aesthetic entities but as “social spaces” where genuine connection and integration can occur. She expressed concern that current policy decisions are being driven by prejudiced perspectives, leading to exclusionary practices rather than fostering inclusivity.

The controversy stems from Merz’s recent comments ostensibly addressing concerns over the appearance of urban areas, widely interpreted as targeting visible signs of migration and perceived social decline. Welskop-Deffaa’s rebuke highlights the potential for such rhetoric to exacerbate existing societal divisions and to mask underlying issues of social inequality.

Rather than engaging in what she deems unproductive debates fueled by aesthetic concerns, Welskop-Deffaa calls on political actors to prioritize concrete action. She emphasizes the demonstrated expertise of social service providers, churches and community organizations – organizations that have been actively creating inclusive spaces for years. She offered to educate those unfamiliar with this practical work, arguing that it represents a more robust and sustainable approach to societal cohesion than superficial “monochromization” of public facades, which, according to her interpretation of recent statements, appear designed to conceal diversity.

The intervention from a leading figure within the CDU underscores an internal tension within the party and raises critical questions about the direction of urban policy and its potential impact on Germany’s social compact.
