Greens Accuse AfD of Provocation and Exploiting Victimhood

A growing rift within the German parliament is escalating as Green Party parliamentary group leader Katharina Droege has accused the Alternative for Germany (AfD) of deliberately employing provocative tactics and cultivating a victimhood narrative.

Speaking to Bild am Samstag, Droege alleged a calculated strategy employed by AfD representatives aimed at disrupting parliamentary debates and subsequently portraying themselves as victims of unfair treatment. She described the pattern as a “script” suggesting a pre-planned effort to elicit Ordnungsrufe (points of order) and then capitalize on the resulting reprimands with displays of self-pity.

Droege’s critique highlights a concerning trend within the Bundestag, raising questions about the AfD’s intentions and the efficacy of current parliamentary procedures in managing their behavior. “This is obviously their strategy” she emphasized, “and no one should fall for it.

The escalating frequency of Ordnungsrufe directed at AfD members has become a focal point of contention. Droege clarified that decisions regarding these interventions are the purview of the Bundestag’s presiding officers, implicitly suggesting a need for consistent and impartial application of parliamentary rules. Her accusations represent a pointed escalation in the ongoing political tensions, prompting scrutiny of the AfD’s methods and a renewed debate about maintaining decorum and productive discourse within the German parliament. The Green Party’s leader’s public warning signals a determination to expose and counter what she views as a manipulation of parliamentary processes for political gain.
