Danish army chief Michael Wiggers has announced that Denmark will expand its cooperation with the Bundeswehr in the Arctic and in Greenland following a recent exploration mission.
In an interview with the news network “Redaktionsnetzwerk Deutschland”, Wiggers said, “We will deepen our cooperation in the Arctic”. He explained that Germany sees great value in conducting training exercises in the region because it helps prepare forces for Arctic operations. “We will lay the groundwork for further joint exercises in and around Greenland-not just on land but also in airspace and at sea” he added.
The commander praised Germany’s support in recent and other matters, calling it a “highly reliable partner”.
Wiggers also dismissed calls to revise and expand regional NATO defence plans to improve Arctic security. “The defence plans are up to date, but we now need to apply them in exercises” he said.
Finally, he commended U.S. President Donald Trump’s proposal to establish a missile‑defence shield called the “Golden Dome” in Greenland. “The Golden Dome is primarily intended to protect the United States, and it’s a very good idea” Wiggers remarked, adding that it would be useful for defending the entire North American territory.
