CDU Pushes for Minimum‑Wage Exemptions for Seasonal Farm Laborers

The Union seems to be preparing a new push to exempt seasonal farm workers from the minimum wage. A February proposal for the CDU federal convention, which the party recommends adopting, was reported in the mid‑week edition of the “Rheinische Post”.

The proposal states that the CDU wants to allow a departure from the minimum wage for seasonal agricultural workers. These employees would only work during peak harvest periods, not as full‑time staff. The justification notes that the workers often come from abroad, where an hourly rate below the German minimum would still be well above local standards. The party argues that lower wages could allow “even more seasonal workers to benefit”.

The farmers’ association has long urged an 80‑percent cap on the minimum wage for seasonal farm labor. Federal agriculture minister Alois Rainer (CSU) has also expressed openness to the idea. However, a review conducted in July suggests that such a measure may not be legally feasible.
