Immediately before Minister Katherina Reiche (CDU) is scheduled to present the 2026 annual economic report, the Greens are firing a sharp critique at Chancellor Friedrich Merz’s (CDU) economic policy in the Bundestag. “So far the CDU‑led federal government has been focusing on insulting workers and handing out election gifts rather than addressing the real problems faced by businesses and their employees” said Sandra Detzer, the Greens’ spokesperson for economic policy, to the “Redaktionsnetzwerk Deutschland” (Wednesday edition).
Reiche plans to unveil the report on Wednesday in Berlin. It will be her first time doing so; last year, her predecessor Robert Habeck delivered the document and reported only a modest 0.3 % growth.
According to the Greens, there has been no significant improvement since then. “There is no sign of an economic turnaround; the small growth can be attributed to special effects” Detzer said. She described the German economy as still in a “perfect storm” with past measures having fizzled out without effect. “What has worked in the federal government so far is essentially one thing: heated debate over the situation analysis and the correct solutions. That squanders Germany’s future competitiveness” the Greens’ economic expert added.
