The Berlin Brandenburg Airport (BER) shut down operations again on Thursday evening due to the winter weather. An ice storm means there will be no departures or arrivals for the rest of the night, the airport announced. Passengers scheduled to fly on Friday are advised to check their flight status.
Even after the announcement, arrivals from Athens, Jeddah, Tel Aviv, and Zürich were still listed as “planned” but it was initially unclear whether those flights could actually land. Many other scheduled arrivals were cancelled, including flights from Milan, Düsseldorf, Frankfurt, Istanbul, London, and Rome.
Cancellations also affected departures. Two flights each to London and Dubai were cancelled, as were flights to Luxembourg, Barcelona, Stuttgart, Tel Aviv, and Doha.
Earlier in the day there were already numerous cancellations and delays. The first flights only departed in the morning, apparently after issues with de‑icing had been resolved. In addition, Berlin Brandenburg has a night‑time flight ban between 00:00 and 05:00, so the airport is automatically closed during those hours.
