Germany Targets End-February Release of Heating Law Key Points

The key points for a new heating law, long promised by the government, are expected to be announced soon.
Matthias Miersch, head of the SPD parliamentary group, told the “Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung” that the points will be presented in the upcoming legislative session at the end of February. The schedule had originally called for the draft to be released by the end of January, but the timetable for a final vote by summer now appears fragile.

Miersch stressed that this is not about retreating from climate‑protection ambitions, even if that might appease some factions within the Union. He noted that “within the Union there is no consensus on trimming the climate targets”. Some members of the CDU and CSU may wish to do so, but there is also a current of thought focused on preserving the environment. He described the coalition agreement as clear and consistent with his own position.

He spoke positively of his relationship with Union whip Jens Spahn. “There is an absolute binding commitment between Jens Spahn and me” Miersch said. “After the disappointing results before the judicial elections, I now receive early insights into where potential issues may arise in the Union faction”.

Miersch also praised Chancellor Friedrich Merz, calling him “the guarantor that the CDU’s safeguard remains intact. With Merz at the helm, the sections of the CDU more open to the AfD cannot gain traction”.
