Japan’s LDP Wins Majority in Parliamentary Election Under First‑Female Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi

The ruling Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) has won a majority in Japan’s House of Representatives, according to early post‑polls.
Surveys by NHK and Kyodo, based on voter interviews at polling stations, show that Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi’s party will secure that majority on its own. Whether the coalition, which also includes the Japan Innovation Party (JIP), can achieve a two‑thirds supermajority remains unclear.

In the previous 2024 general election the LDP‑Komeito coalition lost its majority in the lower house. After the coalition also lost the upper house, former Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba resigned in September 2025. Takaichi succeeded him, becoming Japan’s first female prime minister. Her approval ratings are noticeably higher than her predecessor’s, and she called the early elections to secure a clear parliamentary majority.
