Japan’s LDP Forecasted to Secure Parliamentary Majority Under First‑Female PM Sanae Takaichi.

In Japan’s recent parliamentary election, early projections indicate that the ruling Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) has secured a majority in the House of Representatives. According to post‑voting surveys conducted by the public broadcaster NHK, Sanae Takaichi’s LDP will hold an outright majority in the lower house. The Japanese news agency Kyodo reports the same findings. These figures come from polls taken at polling stations after the vote. Whether this, combined with the coalition partner JIP, will yield a two‑thirds majority remains uncertain.

During the 2024 election, the then‑government coalition of the LDP and Komeito lost its majority in the House of Representatives. Following a defeat in the upper house as well, then‑Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba resigned in September 2025. He was succeeded by Takaichi, who became Japan’s first female prime minister. Her approval ratings are markedly higher than those of her predecessor, and she called early elections in an effort to secure clear majorities in Parliament.
