EU Digital VP Signals Summer Decision on Pan‑European Teen Social‑Media Ban

European Commission Vice‑President Henna Virkkunen says she will make a decision by summer on whether to impose a ban on social‑media use for minors across the EU. She expressed a preference for a single, continent‑wide solution and explained that the Commission is currently collecting data, consulting experts and analysing studies before reaching a final ruling.

Virkkunen added that no preliminary decision has been made. She highlighted that social media remains an important source of information for young people, and the key challenge is identifying the right age cutoff. “Is it 13, 14 or 16?” she asked.

After Australia introduced a ban on users under 16, more EU states are following suit. Spain and France already have such restrictions; Austria is planning a similar measure, and Germany is also debating the issue.
