Greens Push for New Bundestag Police Law to Counter Extremism Threats

German Green Party parliamentary leader Irene Mihalic has urged fast decisions on a Bundestag police law and a reform of the Member of Parliament Act to safeguard against extremism and espionage.

Mihalic told the “Redaktionsnetzwerk Deutschland” that the cases in which only AfD staff have had their house passes refused or revoked demonstrate the need for better protection of the Bundestag. She said the situation is likely only the “tip of the iceberg”.

She warned that people with ties or even loyalty to autocratic nations such as Russia and China must not gain access to highly sensitive information or negatively affect parliamentary processes. The Green politician called for a Bundestag police law that, among other provisions, allows the parliament police to request information from domestic intelligence services during vetted personnel reviews and to incorporate those findings into their evaluations.
