Hardt Warns of Possible New Ukrainian Refugee Surge Amid Russian Attacks on Power Infrastructure

Jürgen Hardt, the foreign‑policy spokesman for the CDU/CSU parliamentary group, said that a new wave of refugees could come from Ukraine. He linked this possibility to the continuing Russian attacks on the country’s heating and electricity infrastructure. “We already fear that, in the coming days and weeks particularly during extreme cold, people in Ukraine might feel compelled to leave their homes and flee, possibly beyond Ukraine’s borders” he told RTL and ntv.

However, Hardt also expressed hope for a different outcome. “I believe that this can be prevented if Russia suffers defeats on the front lines, and if the Ukrainian drone superiority becomes ever more evident. Then we could reach a situation where, for the people in Ukraine, at least the worst of this winter is passed” he said.

Last week the Ukrainian army retook more than 200 square kilometres of its territory from Russian forces. Analysts think the success was largely due to the Ukrainian blockade of Russian troops’ access to the Starlink satellite network-an ability that explains the drone advantage Hardt referenced.
