Schwarzer Urges AfD’s Weidel to Empower Women While Cautioning Against Party’s Rise

Alice Schwarzer says that in the event of a possible chancellorship for AfD leader Alice Weidel, there could be a positive effect for women. “It would, despite everything, probably also have the effect of being encouraging for women” she told the Spiegel’s video program “Spitzengespräch”. She cautioned, however, about the AfD’s growing strength.

She was sharply critical of the United Nations General Assembly President, Annalena Baerbock, of the Greens. Schwarzer asserted that Baerbock’s feminist foreign policy, announced by the former federal foreign minister, “didn’t work at all”. “She completely failed in this regard. She abandoned women in Iran, in Afghanistan, and elsewhere. I believe she was more of a master of words than of deeds”.

Schwarzer also praised former chancellor Angela Merkel, the CDU’s first and only female chancellor, as a role model for young women. “Merkel has done enormously, even if she didn’t intend it” she said. Schwarzer recalled that shortly after Merkel took office, girls in her village built a “Schneemerkel” (a snow‑mermaid) instead of a snowman during the winter. “After we had a chancellor, girls spent a month building a Schneemerkel instead of a snowman. That tells you everything”.
