Mastercard Eyes Digital Euro Partnership, CEO Miebach Says Company Is Open to Joining the Initiative

Mastercard chief executive Michael Miebach sees the credit‑card firm as a potential partner for the digital euro. He told the “Handelsblatt” on Friday that the company is “open to such initiatives” and has experience with digital currencies, already operating in several other countries. Miebach is the only German CEO heading a U.S. conglomerate.

He acknowledged the understandable demand for European payment solutions and noted that Mastercard has heavily invested in recent years to localise technology and data storage. Regarding the U.S. interest‑rate cap on credit cards that President Donald Trump has called for, Miebach said it would have little impact on the business. “Even if consumer habits shift and people pay with fewer credit cards, we will still process all kinds of transactions” he added. “As long as people use Mastercard as a payment method-whether on a credit or debit card-nothing changes for us”.
