Greenland and Denmark Reject Trump’s Hospital Ship Offer, Defend Free Health Care System

Greenland and Denmark dismissed a proposal from U.S. President Donald Trump to send a hospital ship to an Arctic island. “The idea of President Trump to send a hospital ship to Greenland has been noted” said Greenland’s premier Jens‑Frederik Nielsen. “But we have a public health system where treatment is free for citizens”. He stressed that this is a conscious choice and a fundamental part of society. “In the U.S., where a doctor’s visit costs money, it doesn’t work that way”.

Nielsen added that Greenland is “open to dialogue and cooperation” but urged that any discussion take place with the nation itself rather than through random social‑media statements. Dialogue and cooperation require respect for the fact that decisions about Greenland are made there.

Denmark’s Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen also defended her country’s health system, reaffirming that they live in a land where everyone has free and equal access to healthcare. Trump’s announcement followed a medical evacuation of a U.S. submarine crew member in Greenlandic waters.
