Germany’s Nouripour Calls for Asset Freezes on Iran’s Regime Elites to Bolster Sanctions

Omid Nouripour, the vice‑president of the German Bundestag and a member of the Greens, urged Germany to impose new sanctions on the Iranian regime. Speaking to the political magazine “Politico”, he said: “This is what Germany should tackle right now”. Beyond listing members of the Revolutionary Guard, he called for measures such as freezing the private assets of regime elites. He noted that there are regime officials who hold wealth in Europe and that these assets should be seized.

Nouripour criticized the absence of decisive action so far. He pointed out that a prohibition on the activities of Iranian representatives in Germany is still missing. “They must see that their work does not go unpunished” he said. He also suggested that an indictment by the Federal Prosecutor General against those responsible could signal a firm stance.

Referring to the current diplomatic talks in Geneva between Washington and Tehran, Nouripour remained skeptical. “There is a possibility of agreement” he said. “But they only discuss uranium enrichment, while the regime has a history of fraud and cannot be trusted”.

He warned that any deal must not neglect other critical issues. “We are talking about massive crimes against humanity this year” he added. “If the outcome turns out to be merely a nuclear deal that excludes considerations of repression and regional destabilisation, that would be the worst case for us”.
