Germany Sets First Steps to Tackle Post‑Infectious Diseases, Accelerating Research and Clinical Trials

The Steering Committee of the National Decade for Post‑Infectious Diseases reached agreement on initial measures during its inaugural meeting. The Federal Research Ministry announced this on Friday, with Minister Dorothee Bär (CSU) emphasizing the urgency of a deeper understanding of the causes and mechanisms of post‑infectious conditions and the need for faster therapies.

Key actions include:

” Establishing a comprehensive database on post‑infectious diseases.
” Promoting genome sequencing for both healthy individuals and patients.
” Strengthening phase 2 to 3a clinical studies to rapidly test promising treatment approaches in practice.
” Creating thematic working groups that focus on translating research findings into clinical care.

The ministry is working closely with stakeholders from federal and state governments, research institutions, the health system, and the health‑economics sector. In total, thirteen organizations and associations are involved. The measures are set to be implemented from the second quarter of 2026, with additional funding calls scheduled throughout the year.
