The Lebanese government has declared the recent attacks by Iran‑backed Hezbollah illegal.
On Monday, Prime Minister Nawaf Salam announced a ban on Hezbollah’s military activities, limiting the group’s role to the political sphere. He also rejected any military or security operations launched from Lebanese territory that fall outside the framework of legitimate institutions.
Salam stressed that all Hezbollah activities are “illegal” and urged security forces to prevent any attacks originating in Lebanon. At the same time, he reaffirmed Lebanon’s commitment to cease hostilities with Israel and resume negotiations.
Hezbollah fired rockets at Israel for the first time since the 2024 ceasefire, prompting large Israeli air strikes in the south of Lebanon. The practical impact of the government’s ban on military activity remains uncertain, particularly regarding enforcement.
