German Justice Minister Challenges US‑Israel Strike on Iran, Urges Rule of Law and Diplomacy

Bundesjustizministerin Stefanie Hubig-member of the SPD-expressed doubts that a joint U.S. and Israeli attack on Iran is backed by international law. She told the news portal T‑Online that the principle of self‑defence has not yet been demonstrated by scholars in this context.

“In the long run, the right of the stronger does not serve us” Hubig said. “As Minister of Justice it is clear to me that our aim must be to uphold the strength of the rule of law”.

The minister added that the Iran regime, ruled by the Mullahs, has inflicted decades of terror, oppression and injustice on the Iranian people. She noted that many hoped for an end to the regime and for freedom, and stressed that the prohibition of violence under international law, as well as a sovereign state’s territorial integrity and political sovereignty, must be respected.

Emphasising diplomacy, Hubig said, “Negotiations are always better than bombs”. She warned that civilians end up suffering in any war, and that a conflagration across the region must be urgently prevented. “The law of nations is the hallmark of the twentieth century; a rules‑based world is, in the end, a more peaceful one”.
