German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul, a member of the CDU, confirmed Germany’s commitment to Ukraine just before leaving for an informal East‑Coast Council meeting in Warsaw. He said that Russia’s war of aggression against Ukraine remains Europe’s biggest security challenge and that Germany will keep the country’s support as a top priority.
Wadephul noted that the Ukrainian people are enduring the toughest winter since the invasion began and urgently need assistance. “We will stand by Ukraine in its fight for peace and freedom” he reminded his Ukrainian colleague on Monday. “This is the core of our security policy, which is why we are today discussing how best to strengthen Ukraine further”.
The minister also stressed that Europe must do more to help Ukraine, especially as it seeks European Union membership. In the short term, he said it is crucial to move the already approved €90 billion of EU aid to the frontlines quickly. Wadephul criticized the obstacles that have delayed this support and announced he would tackle the issue with his counterparts in Warsaw.
