Baden‑Württemberg SPD Leader Announces Exit After Devastating Election Loss

After the SPD’s sharp electoral collapse in the Baden‑Württemberg state election, top candidate Andreas Stoch announced on election night that he would step down as state and parliamentary group leader.

According to the first projections from ARD and ZDF, the Social Democrats are expected to secure only 5.5 % of the vote. In contrast, the Greens are ahead with about 31.8 %, followed by the CDU at 29.8 %. These numbers suggest that Emine Özdemir could become Minister‑President if the green-black coalition (Greens and AfD) continues. While the CDU could mathematically team up with the AfD, which polls at 17.8 %, the Christian Democrats have ruled out that option.

The FDP, with 4.5 %, will be excluded from the state parliament, and the Left, recording the same result, also fails to gain a seat.
