After the likely exclusion of the FDP from the state parliament in the Baden-Württemberg elections, party leader Hans‑Ulrich Rülke has signalled that he will resign. He told the SWR on Sunday evening that if the party fails to pass the five‑percent hurdle, he will “naturally” give up the chairmanship. Current polls clearly show the FDP on a path out of the state parliament of its home base.
According to the latest estimates from ARD and ZDF, the Greens are averaging 30.6 percent, putting them ahead of the CDU at 29.7 percent. This would make Greens leader Cem Özdemir the likely successor as premier if the green‑black coalition continues. Although the CDU could, in theory, cooperate with the AfD-projected at 18.5 percent-the Christian Democrats have ruled that option out.
The election day was tough for the SPD, which will only obtain 5.6 percent. The FDP will leave the parliament with 4.4 percent, and the Left similarly fails to secure a seat with the same result.
