UNHCR estimates that up to 3.2 million Iranians have been temporarily displaced within the country because of the ongoing conflict. Preliminary figures suggest that between 600 000 and one million households are affected, the organisation disclosed on Thursday. Most of those displaced fled from Tehran and other large cities, moving northward and into rural areas in search of safety.
The agency also notes that refugee families taken in domestically-particularly Afghan families-are impacted. They are especially vulnerable, already living in precarious conditions and lacking robust support networks. Rising insecurity and limited access to basic services have prompted families to leave affected zones.
In response, UNHCR has adapted its programmes to the escalating needs on the ground. It is collaborating with national authorities and partners to assess emerging demands and strengthen preparedness amid growing population movements.
