Berlin’s acting Governing Mayor, Kai Wegner (CDU), has warned students against what he perceives as the infiltration of their demonstrations by pro-Palestine activists. Speaking to the television channel “Welt,” Wegner noted that they have already seen initial forms of protest, including barricading, at Berlin schools, which is accompanied by conversations regarding the Palestine issue. He stated that pro-Palestine initiatives are also active in these environments.
The CDU politician urged students not to be manipulated, stressing that they have a fundamental right to freedom of expression. While also affirming the value of students protesting for their rights, such as demanding a better education system-pointing out that his government has invested significantly in school quality and has addressed teacher shortages-Wegner cautioned against utilizing protests for the sake of the Middle East conflict.
Wegner emphasized that while strict dialogue is the preferred approach, the Berlin police will take firm action if protests are undermined or infiltrated by violence against emergency services, looting, or property damage. He warned that if such actions occur, the police will respond decisively, and even water cannons could be deployed. Although he affirmed that the freedom of assembly is a constitutional right, he firmly stated that freedom of expression does not justify riots or criminal activity.
