The federal government is facing heavy criticism from the public over its strategy to tackle high fuel prices.
According to an Insa survey conducted for “Bild am Sonntag”, 75 % of respondents feel that the government is doing insufficiently to curb rising gasoline and diesel costs, while only 13 % believe the current measures are adequate.
Most citizens remain skeptical about the proposed new regulation for petrol stations. 67 % doubt that limiting price increases to just one per day will actually lower fuel prices, whereas only 22 % foresee a positive effect.
On the other hand, broad majorities back other forms of relief:
” 76 % support a reduction of taxes and fees on petrol and diesel (15 % opposed).
” 68 % favour the state confiscating so‑called “overprofits” from oil companies (14 % opposed).
The survey sample comprised 1,001 participants surveyed between 12 and 13 March 2026.
