Spahn Warns of a “Second 2015” as Iran War Spurs New Refugee Flows, Calls on EU to Tighten Migration Rules

Facing the war in Iran, the German parliamentary faction leader Jens Spahn (CDU) warned of a possible new refugee crisis and again called for a tougher European migration policy.
“There’s no second 2015 allowed” Spahn told the NTV programme “Blom & Pfeffer” on Monday. He said the Iran conflict underscores the need for a “migration turnaround” not just in Germany but especially at the European level.

To prepare for a potential surge in displaced people, Spahn wants an EU agreement with secure third countries in place now. Drawing on Germany’s experience in Syria, he stressed the importance of early dialogue with neighbouring states. As an example, he cited talks with Turkey to secure regional support. Spahn insists that such preparations should not wait until refugees are already on the move.
