German Social Association Welcomes Fuel‑Price Taskforce, Urges Action to Shield Low‑ and Middle‑Income Communities

The Social Association Germany (SoVD) welcomed the “fuel‑price taskforce” that the ruling coalition has set up and called for measures to protect people on small and medium incomes.

“It’s good that the federal government is finally sending clear signals” said SoVD chairwoman Michaela Engelmeier in an interview with the “Rheinische Post” (Tuesday edition). “The government aims to shield citizens from explosive price rises. In particular, rural residents often have no alternative to the car for commuting, shopping or doctor appointments”.

Engelmeier sharply denounced the oil companies, saying, “It cannot be that corporations are exploiting a crisis to fatten their wallets”. She argued that the rising fuel prices are an “over‑proportional burden for people with small and medium incomes” and insisted that decisive action is now required.

On Monday, the coalition‑appointed taskforce met to discuss the steep rise in fuel and energy prices.
