Despite the current conditions of drought and low water levels, the Association of Energy and Water Management (BDEW) states that Germany’s power supply remains secure. Kerstin Andreae, CEO of the BDEW, told RTL and ntv on Tuesday that they currently see no strain regarding scarcity or supply issues in Germany, attributing this safety to their highly diversified infrastructure.
Andreae further explained that, given the nearly 60 percent share of renewables in Germany’s electricity mix and the availability of supplementary capacities, such as from coal-fired power plants, there is strong confidence that the power supply can be maintained. Furthermore, she noted that Germany is currently exporting electricity, positioning the country as a “stability anchor” within Europe. Nevertheless, she emphasized that the BDEW is closely monitoring how the situation develops in affected countries within the broader European power grid.
Regarding electricity prices, the markets have thus far shown no significant reaction. Andreae called this a positive indicator, suggesting that there is no immediate cause for concern over shortages. She also clarified that due to existing long-term contracts, a price increase for consumers is not expected in the short term, meaning the public will not be affected by immediate price fluctuations.
