Germany’s federal government keeps all options open regarding a possible German role in security measures on the Strait of Hormuz. “That is something we’ll consider when the time comes, and we cannot speculate now from this position” a spokesperson from the Ministry of Defence told the dts news agency on Friday.
The spokesperson highlighted that the Bundeswehr possesses a range of capabilities that can be applied across its various combat units, allowing for both supportive and operational roles. This flexibility applies in a broader sense, not only to a potential deployment in the Middle East. The government is still in dialogue and will assess how best to use its forces should a need arise.
Earlier that night, following the EU summit, Chancellor Friedrich Merz (CDU) reaffirmed that Germany could participate in security measures in the strategically vital Strait of Hormuz, a key passage for global energy supplies. His condition, however, is that first the hostilities must subside.
