Coalition Taskforce Aims to Halt Food Inflation Fueled by Middle East Conflict, Proposes Fertilizer Programme and Tax Relief

The taskforce that was set up by the Union (CDU/CSU) and the SPD to tackle the high fuel prices will now also focus on the rising food prices caused by the conflict in the Middle East.

Deputy chair of the SPD parliamentary group, Esra Limbacher, told the “Rheinische Post” on Saturday that “every day it becomes clearer that the war in Iran will not end quickly. Higher prices for fertilizers and transport are poised to drive food prices up next”.

She added that the coalition taskforce will discuss “inflation‑curbing measures” next week. Her agenda includes an immediate programme to support domestic fertilizer producers and tax relief within the food sector. “Inflation is a poison for people on normal incomes and for our economy. We must protect our population” she said.

Limbacher, who is responsible for agriculture and food, warned that without political counter‑measures the cost of living would become noticeably higher for many people.
