Christian Dürr is reportedly preparing to resign as the FDP’s federal chairman. “Politico” reported this on Monday. According to the outlet, Dürr wants to allow the entire executive board-including the presidium and the federal board-to be re‑elected at the party’s federal convention in May. A vote on this proposal is currently taking place within the federal board, and the party has scheduled a press conference for 5 p.m. to discuss the matter.
Earlier on, FDP vice‑chairman Wolfgang Kubicki called for Dürr’s resignation, noting that Dürr had been elected for a two‑year term with a large majority ten months ago. Speaking to the magazine “Stern”, Kubicki said he had no current ambitions for the party chair position. “I am open to many roles, from the federal president to a DAX CEO, but right now the question is not an issue. A new election in the party would have to be prepared by others” he added.
In the state election held in Rheinland‑Pfalz on Sunday, the FDP lost 3.4 percent of the vote. With only 2.1 percent, the party will no longer hold seats in the state parliament or be represented in the state government.
