Diesel prices in Germany have jumped again in the latest weekly comparison. According to ADAC, the nationwide average price for a liter of diesel was €2.288 on Tuesday, an increase of 12.6 cents from the previous week. The price of Super E10 rose by 3.2 cents to an average of €2.074 per liter.
Last week both fuel types hit their yearly highs. On Friday, Super E10 cost €2.086 per liter, and diesel reached an average of €2.310 on Monday. ADAC attributes the sharp rises to the higher oil price caused by the war in Iran, which is affecting the Gulf region. While Brent crude had briefly climbed above $110, it has recently fallen below $100.
ADAC calls again for a temporary reduction of the fuel tax to ease motorists’ burden. Diesel could be lowered to the EU minimum energy tax rate, which would give relief of about 15 cents per liter. In addition, an “Austria model” is being proposed to take effect on 1 April: fuel prices would then be allowed to increase only once per day, but could be reduced as many times as needed.
