Faced with looming price rises for groceries, the German Social Association (Sozialverband Deutschland, SoVD) has called on the federal government to reduce the value‑added tax on food items at once.
SoVD chair Michaela Engelmeier told the “Rheinische Post” (Saturday edition) that a reliable, healthy diet must remain affordable for all and cannot depend on how much one has in the wallet. “We need decisive political action to genuinely relieve consumers” she said.
Her proposal focuses on making staple foods deliberately cheaper, for example through a VAT cut. “The key is that this relief actually reaches the people” Engelmeier added.
