Intelligence Warns of Iran’s Illegal Procurement Efforts

The Federal Office for the Protection of the Constitution (BfV) issued a warning regarding efforts by Iran to rebuild capacities lost during the conflicts with Israel and the United States, utilizing illegal exports from Germany. According to the BfV’s statement provided to “Welt am Sonntag”, if the current leadership remains in power, there is an expectation that the repair and reconstruction of facilities will be driven by the illicit procurement of cutting-edge technologies from Europe and Germany.

Germany is reportedly a target of Iranian procurement efforts because of its status as a high-technology location. The authority cautioned that manufacturers and suppliers of dual-use goods are particularly at risk of becoming involved in proliferation-related transactions. Proliferation generally refers to efforts to create weapons of mass destruction.

The German intelligence service indicated that Iranian procurement efforts are focused on items ranging from high-technology goods and CNC machines to epoxy resins, (explosion-proof) small motors, vacuum pumps, and carbon fibers. Furthermore, the source noted that Iran remains dependent on German dual-use goods.
