Digital expert Sascha Lobo argues that Germany is currently unprepared to defend against attacks utilizing artificial intelligence (AI). Writing for the Funke Media Group newspapers (Thursday editions), he stated that authorities and critical infrastructure are only partially equipped to handle intelligent hacks. While he acknowledges that a “comprehensive AI hardening of the state, administration, and related institutions” is underway, he emphasizes that this process requires time, funding, and, crucially, specialized personnel, who are currently scarce.
Lobo warns that criminal acts are already being committed using AI today. He pointed out that new attack surfaces are emerging everywhere-including security sectors, government offices, critical infrastructure, and even small online shops-and these areas are not adequately secured.
The internet specialist further elaborated that he views the greatest threat as the potential for actors with malicious intent-be they criminal, politically motivated, or both-to gain access to powerful AI. He specifically mentioned Russian President Vladimir Putin, but also referenced states like North Korea and Iran, noting that these nations will increasingly use AI to pursue their objectives in the future.
