Green Leader Slams Government’s Siren Policy on Syrian Refugees

Katharina Dröge, the co-chairwoman of the Green party’s parliamentary group, sharply criticized statements made by the federal government regarding the potential departure of a large number of Syrian refugees from Germany. Speaking to the Funke Media Group’s newspapers, she stated that Syria remains unsafe. She then noted that approximately 730,000 Syrian citizens who currently reside in Germany hold long-term residency permits. Dröge also added that many Syrians are employed in essential and critical professions, helping to keep systems like the healthcare sector operational. According to her, such statements from Friedrich Merz, the CDU’s federal chairman, only generate confusion and insecurity, characterizing it as poor policy. Regarding the 80 percent figure initially cited by Chancellor Friedrich Merz, the parliamentary leader questioned its validity, suggesting that Merz likely fabricated the number spontaneously, as he could evidently not explain its origin, and stated that the claim has no connection with reality.
