Young Union Leader Slashing Fuel Price Hopes, Calls for Tax Cuts and Strong Cartel Law Enforcement

Johannes Winkel, Chairman of the Young Union (CDU), has lowered expectations regarding further measures to reduce fuel prices. Speaking to the newspapers of Funke-Mediengruppe (on Thursday’s editions), the CDU representative stated, “Once oil prices drop again, we won’t need any further discussions about tax breaks”.

According to Winkel, it is difficult to predict how prices will develop right now. However, he added that if the state still wishes to intervene despite declining prices, it could “simply lower taxes and levies on gasoline”.

Furthermore, the head of the Young Union advocated for the prompt utilization of the new rules within competition law. He asserted that strengthening competition law by reversing the burden of proof was the correct move, adding, “Now it depends on applying these rules consistently”.
