Highway Truck Traffic Dips in March, Signaling Potential Economic Slowdown

The distance traveled by commercial trucks with at least four axles on federal motorways decreased by 0.3 percent in March 2026 compared to the previous month. Additionally, the seasonally adjusted index for commercial truck mileage on motorways dropped by 0.6 percent compared to March of the previous year, according to the Federal Office for Logistics and Mobility (BALM) and the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis), which released the data on Thursday. Authorities noted that motorway truck traffic figures provide early insights into the current economic cycle within the industrial sector. Statisticians explained that since economic activity generates and requires transportation services, there is a clear correlation between the truck mileage index and indexes of economic activity-particularly the production index for the manufacturing industry.
