President Steinmeier Hails Mario Adorf’s Legacy as Master Actor of German Cinema

German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier offered condolences following the passing of actor Mario Adorf. On Thursday, Steinmeier praised Adorf as “one of the most significant German actors” stating that his work enriched cultural life far beyond Germany’s borders. Adorf found success in both German film and international cinema, without sacrificing his distinctive style. Steinmeier noted that “in his many roles, Mario Adorf brought us close to both the strengths and weaknesses of humanity-with great intensity and great sensitivity”. Many of his characters have become fixtures in the collective film and theater memory. He highlighted particularly his memorable roles as Cologne Detective Beizmenne in “The Lost Honour of Katharina Blum” and as adhesive factory owner Heinrich Haffenloher in the series “Kir Royal”. The President also recalled significant personal encounters with Adorf. He shared the memory of them working together in Berlin to lay a stumbling stone memorial for Bruno Lüdke, who was unjustly accused of multiple murders by the National Socialists and who died from the consequences of human experiments in 1944. Steinmeier concluded by acknowledging that Adorf illuminated his characters through his vocal power and physical presence, moving audiences to both laughter and tears. He affirmed that he will be remembered as a wonderful actor and a remarkable human being.
